1985 witnessed the inauguration of Rajiv Gandhi University Itanagar, formerly known as Arunachal University in Rono Hills. RGU was converted as a Central University in 2007. Currently there are 7 degree colleges affiliated with RGU. At present, Prof. Tamo Mibang is the Vice Chancellor of RGU.

RGU Itanagar offers Graduation and Post-Graduation courses in various fields.
